Honda Accord, Suzuki Kizashi rate highest on new crash test; 2 Toyotas rated poor

Honda

Thirteen mid-sized cars have earned high marks on the insurance industry's newest frontal-crash test, but a pair of Toyota models tested fared worse than the rest.

The so-called small overlap test involves crashing the front corner of a car into a barrier at 40 mph. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety devised the test to simulate a collision with a stationary object such as a tree or a utility pole.

Just three out of 11 luxury cars rated "good" or "acceptable" on the insurance industry group's first round of tests this summer, but today the IIHS gave a good rating to the four-door Honda Accord and the Suzuki Kizashi, and an acceptable rating to 11 more mid-sized cars.

"Normally we see new technology and new innovations go into the luxury cars first, so we see them doing better," IIHS President Adrian Lund said. "This is a bit of a surprise."

Three other models -- the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu and Volkswagen Jetta sedan -- rated as "marginal."

Toyotas fared worse

The Toyota Camry sedan and Prius v hybrid ranked worst on two measures of safety, leading IIHS to slap them with a "poor" overall rating.

In both of Toyota's vehicles, the crash caused significant intrusion into the occupant compartment -- in the case of the Camry, the front wheel was forced sharply backward toward the driver's feet. The driver-side airbags also failed to fully prevent a blow to the test dummy's head in both crashes.

"They've got to find a way to strengthen the occupant compartment and manage the forces out there on the edge of the vehicle," Lund said of Toyota.

During the small overlap test, 25 percent of the vehicle overlaps with a barrier during the collision, compared to 40 percent during the current moderate overlap test.

Automakers are responding by adding structures to absorb impacts to the front corners of a car, and by strengthening compartments so that wheels cannot be forced so easily backward toward passengers' feet.

Ford, Subaru, Volkswagen and Honda all told IIHS they designed vehicles to handle the new test, Lund said, and Toyota has told the group it plans to follow suit.

"With this new test, the Institute has raised the bar again and we will respond to the challenge," a Toyota spokesman said. "We are evaluating the new test protocols and can say that there will not be one single solution to achieve greater crash performance in this area."

The spokesman added that Toyota leads all automakers in the number of models named "Top Safety Picks" for 2012 by IIHS. Those 19 models from Toyota, Lexus and Scion include the Camry and Prius v.

Honda engineering

Honda used an approach known as ACE, or advanced compatibility engineering, to dissipate crash energy outside the area affected by a head-on crash.

Chuck Thomas, chief engineer for automotive safety research at Honda, said the alterations added a bit of weight to cars such as the Accord, which was redesigned for model year 2013 with the new test in mind.

"We always want to develop a vehicle that's absolutely as light as possible, but also strong enough to do everything we need to do," he said. High-strength steel helped make up for some of the increase, he added, so about "10 to 15 pounds is what the guys like me have added to the vehicle to improve performance."

IIHS Ratings
Rated good:
-- Honda Accord, four-door
-- Suzuki Kizashi

Rated acceptable:
-- Ford Fusion
-- Honda Accord, two-door
-- Kia Optima
-- Nissan Altima, four-door
-- Nissan Maxima
-- Subaru Legacy
-- Subaru Outback
-- Dodge Avenger
-- Chrysler 200, four-door
-- Mazda 6
-- Volkswagen Passat

Rated marginal:
-- Hyundai Sonata
-- Chevrolet Malibu
-- Volkswagen Jetta sedan

Rated poor:

New small Honda CUV teased ahead of Detroit debut

Mhhok

Honda released this teaser image today of a new small crossover concept that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The Japanese automaker did not offer up any specific details about what to expect from the new CUV concept, only saying that it is a "global concept model combining a sporty and dynamic SUV profile with a spacious, functional interior."

This concept likely previews the upcoming Fit-based crossover that we've told you about before. Honda is expecting the next-generation Fit to sell something like 200,000 units annually, largely thanks to an expanded model range that is said to include a new sedan in addition to the CUV previewed here.

We'll have the full details when the new concept bows in Detroit next month.

Copy, Paste, Print…Kidney?

Mhhok

By Adam Morehead

Surgeons all over the world are facing an organ shortage crisis. In the past century, we have learned how to treat diseases that were previously fatal, and as a result, we are living longer. However, as we age, our organs tend to fail more and must often be repaired or replaced. Right now, the need for spare healthy organs greatly outweighs the supply, and even in cases where replacements are available, the recipients must take a whole regiment of medicines to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted organ.

What if doctors could grow back a perfect, functioning clone of a patient’s old, damaged organ? In the past decade, researchers in the field of regenerative medicine have brought this idea to life, using living cells as building blocks to grow tissues and certain whole organs outside the body that can later be transplanted into patients. But some researchers are pushing the boundaries even further, hoping to expedite the process through the technology of 3D printing.

Examples of the progress of this field can be seen across the globe and across the many parts of the body. In 2006, Dr. Anthony Atala, Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and his team of scientists nurtured samples of cells less than the size of a postage stamp to grow into functioning bladders that were implanted into human patients. They are now working on developing kidneys, heart valves, and even livers. In 2010, a team of Yale scientists led by Dr. Laura Niklason, Professor of Anesthesiology and Biomedical Engineering at Yale University, successfully engineered and implanted lung tissue into rats. One year later, Dr. Christopher Breur, a pediatric surgeon at Yale School of Medicine, implanted into a 4-year-old girl a degradable blood vessel scaffold that coaxed her own body into re-growing its own blood vessel. And in Stockholm just last year, a man’s cancerous windpipe was replaced with a lab-grown healthy replica that was grown from stem cells found in his bone marrow.

Tissue engineering: from stem cells to organs

Although the procedure itself is complicated, the principle behind most of all tissue engineering simplifies down to a few basic steps. First, researchers craft a scaffold of the tissue they are trying to reproduce. After the basic framework is created, researchers then flood the scaffold with autologous (patient’s own) stem cells, letting them grow all over the framework. Once the scaffold is coated with the new cells, it is then transplanted into a patient’s body, where the organ is accepted as a natural part of the body itself.

Given the huge benefits of perfecting such a technology, regenerative medicine research is one of the fastest growing fields in science today. “In the past year, our lab has tripled, and most of our efforts are related to this the lung project,” says Sashka Dimitrievska, a third-year graduate student in Niklason’s lab. She explains that in the case of Niklason’s team, they used the fibrous structure of existing lungs as a scaffold to hold anchor cells in their proper places places and helping them communicate with each other. The lung scaffolds were placed in an oven-like device (bioreactor) mimicking the aspects of a fetal lung environment. There, they were “seeded” with rat lung cells from a tissue culture, and after a week, the newly engineered lungs were then surgically implanted into rats. So far, these new lungs have performed acceptably well on very short time frames. Niklason’s team is currently working on trying the same process with human lungs.

However, because scientists still do not fully understand the factors of how stem cells change into other types of cells, growing tissues in a lab is currently a somewhat inefficient technology. “The problem with the vessel grafts this is that you cannot apply this approach in an emergency,” says Dimitrievska, explaining that the growth process of tissues needs to first be made faster. “You cannot just tell a patient, ‘Hold your breath now for a few weeks, while I I culture some cells.’”

3D Printing: Organ supply closets?

Some researchers, like Atala from Wake Forest University, believe that this growth process of tissues does not just need to be faster—it needs to take only a few hours. Last year, at a Technology Entertainment and Design conference, Atala boasted that one day doctors should be able to “print” out organs by using a device similar to a desktop printer. Instead of ink, he said, the organ would be printed with cells. It would work by culturing a sample of cells taken from a patient’s body, making a blueprint of the existing organ with a CT scan, and then using the cells mixed with a gel as “ink” to literally print out the new organ.

Atala and his team have been successful in printing out bones and are now experimenting with printing out kidneys. Even though these prototype kidneys are non-functional and years away from practical use, the Wake Forest team believes that a similar device, which would print out skin grafts directly onto a burn patient, is much closer to clinical use.

Right now, many researchers — including Dimitrievska — find the idea of a 3D organ printer that can engineer any functioning organ on demand extremely optimistic. In addition to the cell differentiation problem, scientists are still learning how to supply blood to more complex and solid organs. In fact, science has still not even been able to grow liver, nerve, or pancreas cells. Furthermore, the inside of the printer would have to mimic the human body’s conditions in order for the cells to grow properly — and these conditions would have to differ depending the organ.

Although there is much progress to be made before creating a 3D organ printer, Atala and his colleagues remain hopeful. The last several years have seen massive strides in the study of tissue engineering, so perhaps science fiction is not too far from reality. Perhaps one day in the future, doctors may be able to pull ready-made organs off of their supply shelves just as easily as gauze pads.

2013 Honda N-One Debuts

Honda
The 2013 Honda N-One is the latest model in Honda's N Series of mini vehicles.

The Honda N-One went on sale on Friday in Japan, with no production plans on tap for the U.S.

The N-One lineup includes a premium model that riffs off the Mini Cooper, with a two-tone treatment for the body and roof. There are five color combinations for the two-tone treatment.

The N-One moves Honda's mini vehicles further into upscale territory with a new Emergency Stop Signal system as standard. The system responds to sudden braking and automatically starts the hazard lights to alert vehicles behind the N-One.

The N-One joins the Honda N Box and N Box+ in Honda's home market.

Spooky Witches Fingers

Fingersrecipe

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup confectioners' sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup whole almonds

1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel

Directions:

  1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.
  3. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.
  5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

Worldwide Sales of Honda Hybrid Vehicles Reach One Million Units

Insight

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that cumulative worldwide sales of its hybrid vehicles surpassed one million units as of the end of September 2012. This milestone was reached 12 years and 11 months after the start of sales of the first generation Honda Insight in Japan on November 1999, which achieved a fuel economy rating of 35km/liter, then rated as the world's most fuel efficient vehicle among all mass-production gasoline-powered vehicles.

Honda began hybrid vehicle sales in U.S. in 1999 with the 2000 Honda Insight – the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle sold in America. Cumulative sales of Honda hybrid vehicles in the U.S. market have now reached over 318,000 units, predominately sales of the Insight and Civic Hybrid.

Capitalizing on the unique features of Honda's original lightweight and compact IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) hybrid system, Honda has been enhancing its hybrid vehicle lineup and currently sells eight hybrid models in approximately 50 countries around the world, including four distinct models in the U.S.

In May 2012, Honda began to produce hybrid models in regions outside of Japan starting with the Acura ILX Hybrid in the U.S., followed by production of the Jazz (Fit) Hybrid in Thailand. Honda will also begin production of the Jazz Hybrid in Malaysia at the end of October in an effort to deliver hybrid vehicles with speed, affordability and low CO2 emissions for customers in Asia where demand for fuel-efficient vehicles is expected to grow in the future.

In addition to further advancing the current hybrid model offerings equipped with the one-motor IMA hybrid system, Honda is introducing new hybrid systems for mid-size models that will be equipped with a two-motor hybrid system. Additionally, a highly-efficient and high-output three-motor hybrid system, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All Wheel Drive), offering both superior dynamic handling and fuel efficiency, will be applied to the Acura NSX and RLX Sport Hybrid model, as well as the successor model of the Legend, scheduled to be introduced in Japan.

Under the global environmental slogan of "Blue Skies for Our Children," Honda will continue its efforts to further market penetration of hybrid vehicles to realize a low carbon society.

2013 Honda CR-Z debuts in Paris with more power

Mh

The 2013 Honda CR-Z is powered by the same 1.5L 4-cylinder engine as the models currently in US showrooms but thanks to a new camshaft, a retuned variable valve timing system and a new engine control unit tune, the 2013 CR-Z gasoline engine offers 120 horsepower – up from the 112 offered for the 2012 model year. Next, the electric assist portion of the CR-Z’s hybrid drivetrain has received a new lithium ion battery that produces 20 horsepower compared to the outgoing Nickel Metal Hybrid (Ni-MH) battery setup that offered just 14 horsepower. The 2013 CR-Z also features a new Plus Sport boost system that offers increased acceleration power when the battery is at least 50% charger. The system is activated by the S+ button on the steering wheel (shown above on the right) and when the driver hits the gas – the electric boost system engages and provides more power to the wheels for up to 10 seconds. The S+ system works in ECON, Normal and Sport modes with a gauge on the dash to let the driver know when the system is active and available.

When the revamped gasoline engine and the new battery system work together, the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system of the 2013 Honda CR-Z offers a total figure of 135 horsepower (+13hp) and 140lb-ft of torque (+12lb-ft). This increase in power for the 2013 model combined with the Plus Sport mode equates to a 0-62 time that is 7 tenths of a second quicker than the outgoing model (now 9 seconds flat) and a top speed of 124 miles per hour.

2013 Honda CR-Z Revealed Ahead of Debut at 2012 Paris Auto Show

Moreheadkingston

PARIS — The 2013 Honda CR-Z, which is set to get more power, was revealed ahead of its debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The first full image of the CR-Z was released on Friday. Bits and pieces of the refreshed hybrid were revealed earlier, including such details as restyled alloy wheels, a new instrument panel button marked "S+" and LED headlights.

No powertrain specifications were disclosed, but Honda said "the power of both the petrol engine and electric motor has been increased without comprising fuel economy or increasing exhaust emissions."

Honda said that performance and the hybrid's European on-sale date will be announced at the Paris show.

The 2012 Honda CR-Z hybrid is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 122 horsepower. The engine is linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The EPA says the 2012 CR-Z with the manual transmission returns 31 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway.

The revised 2013 Honda CR-Z will go on sale here in the fall, according to Paul Seredynski, an American Honda Motor Co. spokesman. He said that pricing is not yet available.

The 2012 CR-Z starts at $20,485, including a $790 destination charge. The 2012 CR-Z comes in two trim levels, the CR-Z and CR-Z EX.
