Civic, Other Compact Sedans Earn Praise of KBB

Kbb
Though the 2012 Honda Civic LX was panned earlier this month by Consumer Reports, editors with Kelley Blue Book were singing a different tune when reviewing another trim line of the 2012 Civic.

Kbb.com unveiled the winners of the 2011/2012 Compact Sedan Comparison Test this morning and tied atop the test group was the 2012 Civic EX-L Navi, which shared the spot with the 2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited.

Editors gave both vehicles a score of 7.5 out of 10. The four models in the group received overall scores in addition to the categorical scores for interior, exterior, performance, comfort/convenience and value.

Interestingly enough, the Civic and Hyundai were each praised for different reasons and also had different “weak spots,” KBB noted.

The Civic was strongest in performance and value, while the Elantra was tops in style and design. Coming in third overall was the 2012 Ford Focus SEL, scoring a 6.9 rating, with the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze placing fourth (6.7).

Sharing some more commentary on the Civic, KBB said in listing its strengths that the Civic is “the Mercedes-Benz of compact sedans,” with its weakness being that it is “no longer a class style leader.”

KBB’s synopsis of the Civic stated that it is a “superb example of balance, value and pedigree.”

“To understand why the 2012 Honda Civic EX-L Navi shares the top honors with the Hyundai Elantra Limited in this comparison test, you need to understand what made Mercedes-Benz great. Once, in an era when luxury cars were great and the competition was strong, Mercedes-Benz was the greatest luxury carmaker in the world,” editors commented.

“Now, other automakers build faster cars than Mercedes-Benz, and prettier cars than Mercedes, and more reliable cars, more comfortable cars, better-handling cars, more value-laden cars than Mercedes … but not all at once,” they added. “That ‘nobody does it better all at once’ territory is prime Honda real estate, and the all-new Civic still rules that land. How the Civic does it, however, is a bit of a mystery.”

Explaining that sentiment in more detail, editors said the model “tanked” when it came to exterior style training and was the lowest on the totem pole for interior styling and trunk space.

KBB said the 1.8-liter engine stacked up well when it came to fuel efficiency, editors said the power output was lacking, also suggesting that the “five-speed automatic transmission seems iffy at best in a class where six forward gears is now the norm.”

“Yet somehow, the 2012 Honda Civic EX-L Navi pulls it off. The underpowered engine and under-geared transmission work together beautifully, seamlessly to make certain that you're never stranded at the deep end of the onramp,” they shared. “Like most Honda engines, the Civic's 1.8 really shines at higher revs. The four-wheel disc brakes do a superb job of nestling the Civic to a stop, and while the ride/handling balance places ride far above handling, the steering feel and response belong in a ‘How to Do Everything Right’ textbook.”

Moving along to discuss all four models in the group in more detail, editors said they were fairly pleased with each of them, calling them a “fresh-foot forward for their manufacturers.”

“At some point in time, most everyone drives a compact sedan, whether it is a commuter car, second car, empty nester car or even a rental car,” stated Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kbb.com.

“Because this vehicle class is an inevitable part of most American drivers’ lives, we wanted to put the top new models up against each other head-to-head to see how they would fare,” he continued.

“While the caliber of vehicles is better than ever in the compact sedan category across the board, each model proved to have different strengths and weaknesses that potential buyers should know about before they make their final decision,” Nerad added. “The cars are in the same segment, but they certainly aren’t the same, and we found that each meets the needs of a particular set of consumers.”

Honda plans $800M Mexico plant to build subcompacts for North America

Honda5

Honda Motor Co. said today it will build an $800 million assembly plant in Mexico to produce subcompact vehicles for the Mexican and North American markets.

The Japanese automaker, in a statement, said the plant is scheduled to begin operation in 2014 with an annual capacity of 200,000 units.

Honda and other Japanese automakers are seeking to relocate car and truck production from Japan because the strength of the yen makes it difficult to make money on exports.

In addition to Honda, Mazda Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. have announced plans for new or expanded plants and production in Mexico.

Hyundai Motor Corp. is also looking to add manufacturing capacity in North America, including Mexico, according to several recently published reports.

Honda didn't identify the model to be assembled in Mexico, but the only subcompacts the automaker sells in the United States are the Fit, the CR-Z hybrid and the slightly larger Insight hybrid.

All three models are based on the same platform and now built in Japan.

The Mexico plant will provide Honda with a source of low-cost labor and components to offset the lower profit margins on subcompact models.

8th North American plant

The new Honda plant will be located in a suburb of Celaya, Guanajuato, about 210 miles east of Honda's two existing plants in El Salto, Jalisco, where the company assembles automobiles, motorcycles and auto parts.

Employment at the new plant is expected to reach 3,200 workers, Honda said in a statement.

It will be the automaker's eighth auto assembly plant in North America.

Honda said the new plant will increase its automobile production capacity in North America from 1.63 million units to 1.83 million units by 2014.

More than 87 percent of Honda and Acura cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. market were produced in North America last year.

The smallest vehicle currently assembled by Honda in North America is the compact Civic, which is built at plants in Indiana and Ontario, Canada.

With the new plant, Honda said it will be able to produce light trucks, mid-size sedans and coupes, compact sedans and coupes, and now subcompacts in North America.

"We are confident that the demand for fuel efficient subcompact vehicles in North America will continue to grow, and this plant will enable us to meet customer needs with local production," a Honda spokesperson said today.

IHS Global Insight estimates the subcompact market will double in size

from 2011 to 2015.

Challenging time

The move comes at a challenging time for Honda. Sales in its most important market, the United States, are down 10 percent this year, in part because of the impact of the March earthquake in Japan.

Honda also is dealing with recent bad news on the quality front as Consumer Reports recently gave the automaker's Civic a negative review and the automaker recalled 2.5 million cars, small SUVs and minivans globally, including its popular Accord sedan, to repair a software problem.

Bill Visnic, analyst with Edmunds.com, said siting the plant in Mexico makes sense for the Japanese automaker because profit margins on subcompact cars are thin and Mexico offers lower cost labor.

"Also, after this year's natural disaster in Japan, Honda and the other major Japanese automakers surely will be considering diversifying their production base to other regions," said Visnic.

It is also a challenging time because of inroads made by rivals including Hyundai, particularly in the small-car market.

Honda is No. 5 in the U.S. market, and No. 3 in its home Japan market. Honda says its investment in North America would now total $21 billion.

Cars.com Recommends the 2012 Honda Civic

Civic5

Yesterday, Consumer Reports announced it would no longer recommend the Honda Civic after its 2012 redesign.

The editorial staff at Cars.com has tested various versions of the 2012 Honda Civic over hundreds of real-world miles, and today, we still recommend the car to consumers.

We recommend it for numerous reasons including its terrific mileage, comfortable cabin, top safety scores, high resale value and a long track record of reliability. When the class is so competitive, these factors are what many car shoppers focus on.

In our review of the 2012 Civic we did note that the interior was a step back from the heights of the 2011 Civic. In terms of ride, the new Civic actually is more comfortable than before, but it sacrifices sporty handling in the process.

In a recent Cars.com Shootout we pitted the Civic — an LX model with 15-inch wheels and tires, which is what Consumer Reports tested — against the redesigned 2012 Ford Focus, 2011 Kia Forte, 2011 Chevy Cruze and 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The Civic came in second to the Elantra and was well-ahead of the rest of the group in our scoring.

It was praised for superb visibility, front and rear seat comfort, and acceleration. “The Civic’s automatic is among the group’s most responsive,” Cars.com editor Kelsey Mays said.

The 2012 Civic, which gets an EPA-estimated 28/39 mpg city/highway, returned mileage of 36.8 mpg in our Shootout mileage test that mixed city and highway driving. It topped the Shootout competitors, besting the Elantra at 34.5 mpg. With gas prices still hovering near $4 nationally, the Civic is one of the most efficient non-hybrid models that can fit five people.

The 2012 Civic has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is IIHS’ highest safety award. The federal government has not yet tested the new Civic.

Consumer Reports with its well-earned history of studying car reliability gave the previous Honda Civic sedan its top score for predicted reliability the past three years, and the 2012 earns a Better Than Average score. No other compact car scores higher with Consumer Reports.

Automotive Leasing Guide currently rates the 2012 Civic at 58% residual value for a three-year lease. The segment average is 49%. Residual scores directly impact resale values down the line.

While it may have flaws, the 2012 Honda Civic is still one of the best cars in its class and should be on any short list for compact-car shoppers.
